Backup plan for a lost or stolen Mac
A stolen or lost Mac is a recovery test: the device is gone, local credentials may be unavailable, and any backup stored next to the Mac may be gone too. Azivault is useful when the repository and recovery material survive separately.
The moment this usually goes wrong
The Mac is gone, and the backup disk that was supposed to save you was in the same bag, office, apartment, or car.
The useful recovery plan is the one that still works when you cannot unlock the original Mac, cannot open its Keychain, and cannot point to a local disk sitting next to it.
Do not rely only on nearby storage
An external disk on the same desk is convenient, but it can disappear with the Mac. Keep at least one backup destination away from the Mac's normal location.
S3-compatible object storage is a practical offsite option because Azivault encrypts repository contents before upload and does not bundle storage into the app subscription.
- Use S3-compatible storage for the files you need after device loss.
- Keep a local backup too when fast restore matters.
- Do not store the only recovery password in a note or password vault that is available only on the missing Mac.
Make the backup useless to a thief
Azivault's supported repository format is encrypted. File contents are stored as encrypted blobs, and file and directory names are encrypted in repository metadata.
That matters when the destination is a removable drive, a shared network location, or a cloud object-storage account.
Decide which folders deserve offsite backup
Not every folder needs the same treatment. Download caches and replaceable app installers can be recreated. Work product, financial exports, writing, source material, family archives, and original media usually cannot.
Create separate Azivault plans when different folders need different destinations or schedules. A small offsite plan that runs reliably is better than a broad plan that never finishes.
Keep a recovery checklist
If the Mac is gone, you need enough information to reach the destination and unlock the repository from another Mac.
- Azivault recovery password.
- Storage provider account recovery.
- Bucket, region, endpoint, and access key details for S3-compatible storage.
- Network share address and credentials for NAS destinations.
Practice from a device that is not the original Mac
A lost-device recovery plan should be tested from another Mac or at least another user account. The point is to surface missing passwords, provider recovery gaps, and assumptions about mounted storage before the emergency.
If you use S3-compatible storage, confirm that you can identify the bucket, endpoint, and credentials without opening the missing Mac.
Restore onto a replacement Mac
Install Azivault on the replacement Mac, reconnect or import the repository, unlock it with Keychain material or the recovery password, then browse completed runs in Finder.
Restore into a temporary folder first when you are not sure which version is correct.
After the Mac is reported lost
Treat backup recovery and account security as separate jobs. Start recovery from a clean replacement Mac, but also rotate storage credentials and account passwords when appropriate.
If S3-compatible access keys were stored on the missing Mac, rotate them after you confirm the replacement setup can reach the repository with new credentials.
